On November 7th, my team and I had the chance to spend a day at SLB Islam Qothrunnada, a unique orphanage in Yogyakarta known for its inclusive approach to education for kids with special needs. We went there to offer scholarships and show support, but what we encountered was a powerful and heart-warming experience, filled with excitement, resilience, and an unforgettable day with the kids and educators.
From the beginning, the kids were waiting and welcoming with open arms and hearts. As I tried my best to communicate through two language barriers (Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian sign language), the tour began in the classroom for students who are deaf, although they cannot hear, their excitement and willingness in attempts to communicate with me were touching. As we sat and talked to the students, one came up to me excited to learn that I had lived in Japan as he knew Japanese and proceeded to write out everything he knew. This was astonishing to me as he had learnt multiple languages with no sign of stopping and never let his disabilities limit him. Moreover, two other kids in that class wanted to perform their mime act which they did in perfect unison and gave a great and funny performance. Their confidence and creativity are so inspiring. After the kids talked, asked questions, performed, and received their scholarships, we continued with the tour.

As we continued our tour of SLB Islam Qothrunnada, we observed specialised classrooms specifically for the unique needs of students with autism, cerebral palsy, and other disabilities. Each classroom was thoughtfully designed to create a supportive learning environment, enabling the students to develop their skills and engage in activities tailored to their capabilities. It was amazing to see these kids actively participating, expressing their creativity, and embracing the joy of learning despite the barriers they face.
The dedication of the teachers and staff was seen throughout the visit as they showed remarkable patience, compassion, and a deep commitment to the development and well-being of the children. The individualised attention provided to the students displayed the inclusive approach of the school, which seeks to support every child and help them to reach their full potential. It was clear that the strong bond between the staff and students played a critical role in founding a positive atmosphere.

One of the most memorable moments of the visit was witnessing the excitement on the children’s faces as they received their scholarships. The financial assistance symbolised an investment in their future. It was a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities for these children to access quality education and to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
The experience at SLB Islam Qotrunnada was truly heart-warming and inspiring. We left the school inspired by the resilience and determination of the children, and humbled by the dedication of the teachers who foster an inclusive and supportive environment for them. The visit emphasised the value of inclusivity, the power of education, and the incredible potential that lies within every child, regardless of their circumstances. It was a privilege to see the strength of this community and to play a small part in supporting their journey.
